Path Closures – Lower Tokai

Further to earlier posts, please be aware that SANParks – Table Mountain National Park will be doing path closures in the fynbos conservation site tomorrow, 27 November.  We urge you to please respect the path closures and associated restoration process.

The paths closures result from several restored paths, through critical habitat in Lower Tokai Park, having been inadvertently brushcut in April 2024. These paths will now be closed again. The paths were originally closed in 2010 to allow for the restoration of rare and endangered fynbos species and to provide habitat sanctuary for wildlife where they can be safe from people and dogs.

20% of the Prinseskasteel stream is also being closed for wild animal use and sanctuary and there will be no paths in this area. Hikers and dog walkers will still have access to 80% of the stream on one side, where dogs can drink and play in the pools – but dogs are please to be kept out of the ecologically sensitive wetlands around the stream.

MAPS:
Map One – Shows the core refugium area in Lower Tokai in yellow, and the portion of the canal without paths in blue.
Map Two – Shows path closures. The yellow official paths will remain open, while the dotted red paths – the old forestry tracks – will be closed again.

We are pleased to advise that SANParks has heeded concerns about the use of barbed wire, so this will not be used to close off paths. The public is requested to please honour these no-use zones and not use the closed tracks and wild areas. Please remain on the official paths.

It goes without saying that dogs may not chase or disturb any wildlife in the area. Please note that any transgressors risk receiving warnings and repeat transgressors risk being fined.

Thank you for your respect and understanding.
